Education is one of the of the significant factors of development. Article 21-A, of the Indian Constitution provides for free and compulsory education to all children in the age group of six to fourteen years as a fundamental right in such a manner as the State may, by law determine.

The Elementary Education Department in Assam has been functioning since July 1977 for the development of education in the State. Furthermore, from the year 2001, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan was started in the state of Assam to provide for a variety of interventions for universal access and retention, bridging of gender and social category gaps in elementary education and improving the quality of learning.

In spite of all the measures taken by the government, a large number of children are yet to come under the ambit of universal education. The Assam Rural Development Society has pledged to work in the field of education to enhance the lives of the uneducated population of the state. One of its primary goals is to impart quality education to the children, youth as well as adults in order to improve their quality of life and their standard of living.
